June/ July time

my sister lives in andulusia( tesorillo San martin) and we are planning a small tour through the mountains, me on a bike and her on her horse

I realise that she will have an easier time on the hills

this is our route she has decided on. It will be following the railway

this is what she has told me so far

tessorillo/ montengral to

Jimena - stop here to camp

then to salitre - where she says is camping

then on to Cortes de la frontera

To jimera de libar- we will camp by the river

any body know this area. Where in the uk would there be similar terrain I can practice on

I plan to rent or borrow a bike out there, but take my tent

I can't wait

First of all, good choice. I did an 11-day tour around there in 2007. For me, the best months to do this sort of thing in Spain are May and late September - it's warm but not hot and the weather is usually pretty stable. It's still possible in June and July but it's stinking hot. Also, even though I only saw Cortes from a distance, it's quite hilly around there - just so you know.

I seem to remember that I only camped once on the whole tour because 1) there weren't many campsites and 2) B&Bs weren't much more expensive than the campsites that I did find. Campsite were fifteen euros to the B&B twenty five. Obviously, if you're wild camping then it's very cheap.

I stayed at the campsite in Jimena. I seem to remember the very pretty ride through forests from there to Vejer de la Frontera had lots of signs saying Beware of the Bull. Apparently that's where the bulls destined for bull fights are raised. I don't know if that's more of a problem for a horse than it is for a human. And I don't even know if you'd be travelling along that bit of road anyway. But won't a horse go a lot more slowly and a lot less far than a bike? Might that be frustrating? I don't know. Maybe it'll just give you a good excuse to take it easy.

Anyway, even if it means doing only a few miles a day, even if it means being baked alive, do it anyway - it's lovely.

Don't underestomate the heat. I think July is way too late. May or September would be better. check how much climbing you are planning to do- yoi dom't say jowucj cyclingbexperoence youb have but these mountains have the reputation for being thebsteepest and toughest in Andalusia. The comments about campsite prices are correct - youmight be better off not bothering to take camping gear.

Thanks for your concern, my sister knows these routes well, she rides everywhere. I think we will be wild camping she does a lot, just her and her horse.
I have seen the mountains out there. I have no doubt I can cope. I have got something to aim for.
I plan to do a fair amount of training before then, but living in Lincolnshire means I have to go somewhere else to do it lol !!!!!!
