Hi,

I've got a cycling trip soon and am making preparations. Il be cycling about 80 miles a day for a couple of weeks.
I'm making the journey on a mountain bike and I want to make some modifications to make sure the ride is more comfortable. Il be changing the tyres to road tyres, but does anyone have any other recommendations? Any decent seats around?

Cheers

saddles are personal to you and your backside. What is comfortable for one person is not necessarily good for another.
Consider some bar ends if you don't already have them - they will give another hand position or two which will help a touch which may help to prevent numbness in your hands, something we both suffered from on out first tour and mine took 4 months to return to normal. Lock the suspension out as much as you can and most importantly enjoy it.

Our first tour was done on mtbs.

…….. 80 miles a day, fully loaded on a MTB. You're a bit optimistic. How much cycling do you do now and where?

Where do you plan making your cycling trip, Holland? In which case a MTB is not the best type of bike as there are no mountains in Holland and a MTB is heavy and slow.

There is no point in asking about saddles as they are all very personal and none of the answers may benefit you. See what your mates are riding on and have a go and see what you think. I have found I can ride on uncomfortable saddles with a good pair of padded cycle shorts. All my saddles are Brooks, I love them but some people hate them.

80 mile a day on a MTB are going to be long days. But if thats all you have then go for it.

I average about 35 miles a day on my Thorn Nomad when fully loaded (on reasonable roads, paths). So 80 is a tad ambitious. I, too, have a Brooks (its a B17) on my bike. But as has been said above.....saddles are very personal things. Try a Brooks - you'll either love it or hate it.
my first tour on a mountain bike (knobbly tyres and much off road) covered 700 miles in 13 days of riding and we had some late nights with that... it was hard at times but if the OP is fit, young and enthusiastic... and young as in teenager or early twenties, then it should be OK... I will admit to having slowed down a touch now and tend to only average 45-50 mile days but can pull longer ones when needed...
