I've just ordered one of these to replace my Halfords Carrera as a commuting bike:-

Although it was hard to find, it seems perfect for my needs- and the built on lights, rear lock, butterfly bars, kick stand and front pannier mounts- for extra shopping- really cover all the bases for me.

I have decided against hub gears- I had a Shimano Nexus on my Carrera and it has been more trouble than it's worth. Cycling through all weathers, the hub suffered from water ingress. I replaced it a couple of years ago, at considerable expense, and now it has died again. Hence the new bike. Perhaps I've just been unlucky- but hub gears are expensive to fix when they go wrong, and make removing the rear wheel to fix a puncture a major operation.

Unfortunately the dealer supplying my new bike has just closed for three weeks to escape the Olympics, so I have to wait. But I'm sure it will be worth it!
