Touring in America

This. So much this.

It's easy to deride the USA, but it's a country which has a lot to offer if you're prepared to get past the bombastic outward attitude.

I don’t doubt many of its draws are love or hate. And we’re all entitled to an opinion.

But I also suspect ‘some’ of the thoughts, assumptions and perceptions regarding the USA are derived from what ‘we’ are fed on mainstream media - and formed by folk who’ve never actually been…….

There is a legitimate question over how much the political climate in a country relates to its desirability as a holiday destination, and not just the US, but this is probably not the thread to discuss that or it will soon be closed.

Personally I've seen the parts of the US that interest me before it went a bit mad and have no desire to go back. But Canada definitely interests me if I were to fancy a driving trip.

I dont give a monkeys for politics of any flavour, but im a large ugly mofo with a shaven headand a gunfights moustache and would inevitably singled out as a white supremacist or some nonsense to have my mobile phone downloaded, etc. Can't be doing with anymore the hassle. Spent 6 months working there and have no real desire to return now.

To add to my already 25+ (?) trips to the USA: my wife and I are off for 11 days exploring a small part the East coast of America in two weeks. To include NYC, Boston, Washington DC, Delaware etc

And we’re then going back in August and spending more time on the West Coast. And to kind of follow on from 3 and a bit weeks there in 2022.

Are you really going for a holiday to a country that is actively at war?
I don't think this is safe.
I'm not saying it's likely you could be bombed, but you and your family could be caught in internal terrorism.
Imo, there's even a chance that in a couple of weeks the UK home office will advise us not to travel to the USA.

Uh…..Really ? Have you watched the News and seen the current State of the entire World. Are you UK based ? Do you always feel 100% safe; with the ever increasing amount of hatred crimes (Re: Murders at its worst level) on your own doorstep ? And when hasn’t America been at War with someone……

I thought this was a post about Travel and destinations. Not politics, war, race or other.

But seeing as you’ve asked: absolutely we will be going. And it will take a brave man to stop me. My wife said only this week that she’s always felt safer in NYC (8th visit coming up) than in London - for example.

My ‘Signature mantra’ on another forum is: “Don’t forego the thrills of living for the security of existence”. And absolutely I shall be hoping to do that safely in a few weeks.

I genuinely hope you enjoy your end of the month as much as I will be.

The weather can be a factor in the usa, ice on the roads can be fatal.

It seems ICE are fatal wherever they/it appear

I don't think in all honesty I could justify going anywhere near the U.S at the moment, Canada could well be a better option

Murder rate in England and Wales is almost half of its peak.

I believe there are 6 States in the USA bigger than the UK. Hence the difference in culture, landscape, weather, food, sights, architecture etc etc across some States - let alone the Country as a whole is mind boggling

I’ve seen a fair amount of Europe and there is a lot of natural beauty and sights to see otherwise. But right now it’s of little interest to me other than for a cheap and easily accessible week in the sun during our Winter. Isn’t it as well we’re all so different………

I am sure you like it. But the USA does not appear to be flavour of the month at the moment. What with ICE, threatening to invade Greenland and Spain, taxes, Iran etc. The football world cup is struggling to fill stadiums. Im sure there are some great places to ride and they will become appealing again in a couple of years.

I think politics, war, race and other things have a bearing of where you actually travel.

Jannies nephew is living in Texas. His brother and his family was going to visit him in May, but he has been put off. Jannies nephew has lived in Texas for 3 years and has said the atmosphere has changed in recent months. He likened it to when we had covid. The streets are far quieter and people are staying home at night and at the weekend. He thinks the mood has gone very solemn.

We have toured the States a few times, California, New England, National parks of Yosemite, Monument Valley, Arches, Yellowstone, Grand Canyon etc and also Florida. Like anywhere, there are places you don`t feel as safe. Generally we felt safe. I remember staying in Salt Lake City on one trip, it was lovely. That evening we were watching the news only to find out that there were riots going on downtown. By the next morning we had gone on our way. By the same token, we stayed overnight at a motel in Queensland, Australia. We heard a bit of a fracas going on in the evening and did`nt think any more about it. The next day we learnt that there had been an attempted robbery by gunpoint. You takes yer chances wherever you go, if you don`t you`d never go anywhere. The only thing I will add, is don`t put yourself at unnecessary risk.

My experience anywhere in the world is, if you approach a new people with an open mind, and an open face and a ready smile you will find a welcome everywhere.
