Touring in vietnam

I'm doing a 2 week project out in cambodia after I finish college, and looking into other possible travelling adventures - one idea was to do a bit of touring around vietnam. I'm just taking the initial step of looking into this and collecting ideas at the moment, so just interested in how easy it is to sleep at places, how cycle friendly the roads are (road tourer ok or will I need a mountainbike type tourer) etc

This doesn't help much, but I recently reviewed a 'round the world trip account' book written by a middle aged lady who toured with her husband, and was left with the idea that Vietnam was more cycling friendly than Cambodia, mainly because of the state of the roads. I think they stayed in cheap hotels/hostels etc although they had camping kit too. I think they were on robust tourers.

After suffering from balance and hearing problems, Mary was diagnosed in 2008 with an acoustic neuroma, a benign brain tumour. Long-distance foreign cycling is therefore no longer possible at the moment, but Mary hopes that after treatment she will once again be able to set off on her bike with Warren to continue the cycling abroad that they love .

The older Lonely Planet "Cycling Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia" is still an excellent reference. Keep in mind touring blogs, like crazyguyonabike dont often ride the best routes and in Vietnam, like most other places, your route choice can range from terrible to sublime.
