Give yourself more room, i practice when ever i can, don't want to keep clipping in and clipping out, it wears out the cleats,^_^
It does? I've never mastered the track-stand, or even tried to really, but I've used cleats (for SPD pedals) for at least 10,000km with no discernible wear on them.

I can trackstand for ages, I sometimes even do my entire 10 mile commute without unclipping. There is a trick to the trackstand though, I find it essential to be facing up a slight incline, even if it is just a slight hollow in the tarmac or the camber of the road. I turn my front wheel a little (for some reason I find pointing it to the right the easiest) and then rock the bike back and forth slightly to maintain my balance. The incline means the bike rolls back when I ease off the pedals, I suppose with a fixed gear bike I would be able to trackstand on a flat surface just as well?
