Train "Quiet Zones".......

are like Ipod magnets. Went into one this morning, not because i wanted a quiet journey, just happened to be where the train stopped.

All you could hear was that annoying MP3 player noise, made worse because everybody else was making an effort to be quiet.
Seems like a good idea to have the quiet zone, but human nature seems to dictate that some idiot will always spoil it for the rest.

I asked a lad sitting next to me to stop talking loudly to his dad (who was sitting in the seat in front) as it was a quiet zone. I got a bollocking from his dad, who did not want anyone else telling his offspring what to do, then dad took sprog off to the next carriage in a huff.

So, rather odd reaction, but the desired result was achieved!

My problem with quiet coaches is that I get far more annoyed with a little bit of noise than I would with much louder noises on an ordinary coach. Annoyance with people breaking the rules, as much as with the noise!

Yeh booked a seat in the quiet coach was really disappointed, people still using mobiles, I-pods, small loud children causing havoc. I didn't enjoy my train ride at all that day, plus the return journey was just the same. Grrrr

I inadvertently sat in a quiet carriage on a train in Scotland once. Had my phone on vibrate as I always would, out of simple consideration to fellow travellers. It vibrated; I answered in a very low voice and then noticed the couple opposite and across pointing at a notice, which I realised was the quiet carriage symbol. Couldn't really understand their objection to me talking quietly though - are you supposed to be mute in a quiet carriage?

I didn't because i just got on where the train stopped, stuck the bike in the doorway and sat down, then realised it was a quiet zone. As others have said i got more annoyed with it because it was generally very quiet in there. I don't mind noise in a normal carriage, think i'll stick to them in future.

I nearly always sit in the quiet carriage because I love the peace in there. I can read or just look out of the window without having to listen to some idiot bellowing on or to put up with the groups of pissheads you frequently get on trains these days. If my phone rings I go into the vestibule to have my conversation. And on Virgin the bike spaces are just next door, which is very convenient.

After listening to some incredibly dull business men, in a quiet carrage, psyching themselves up for a sales meeting for the first 20 minutes out of Kings Cross, I asked them polietly to not discuss their work so loudly as a), it was the quiet carrage, , they were five rows behind me and I could still hear every word and c), I was on holiday and didn't want to hear about anyone's work at all that day.

To a man they blushed and left the carrage.
