I think I and many others would take great offense by this.

I am pretty sure that the person "designing" it, is not "clever in computers" and the "clever computer people" will get shoot all the time about "what if we could do this", "what if we could do that".

Why aren't "very clever in computer" people not normal?

Apologies for your offence. My 'Very Clever in Computers' phrase was a tribute to the style of Pooh.

But let's face it, there are quite often situations where one wonders if the system was designed by someone who had any practical experience in the job the system is designed to do. I heard someone from the Inland Revenuw only this morning saying that the current over/under payment problem is down to a computer system that was designed by someone with no idea how the tax system works. (or perhaps to be fair, hadn't been briefed properly - one issue was that the unique identifier for each person ought to be the NI number, but it isn't.)

I've got plenty of friends who are clever in computers, and also normal (;)) and I'm sure they'd all agree, it works best when the job required is properly understood.

Pin stage? I don't have to enter a pin at all - mine is 'collect tickets' -> enter card for 'verification' -> remove card -> enter long 8 digit booking ref -> prints one set of tickets -> start again....

What station/company was the ticket machine?

PIN = 'long 8 digit booking ref. Station was Northampton and machine London Midland but booking was for X/Country between Banbury and Southampton. Booking made on london Midland's website. I cannot add much more until I have another oportunity to experiment with multiple bookings of my own.
