Best advice I could give on training is: stop training at least a week before the event. Most athletes in heavy training are actually permanently tired and under-nourished, you need to give your body time to catch up. Eat well, sleep well and you'll be amazed how strong you feel on the day. You lose fitness at a third the rate you gain it so don't worry about becoming unfit in just a week!

how about riding with a ruck sack full of bricks? there aren't that many long hills in the UK - the idea being to make it harder to go up a hill.

ISTR that graham obree use to train uphill using very hill gears, not sure that is recomended though.
