Training for a marathon

Tis good seeing as I am prone to shin splints (compartments) .... Would they be ok to replace the insole? I wear orthotics, so an orthotic, insole and full gel thingy would add around 20 inches to my height.

You can buy an insole footbed which just has the Sorbothane in the heel and forefoot section and then you don't need the shoe's original insole at all. They're a bit cheaper as well, I think. My advice is to get a size bigger than your regular shoe size and you can always trim it down with a pair of scissors.
