Whats peoples thoughts, I currently cycle 28miles a day round trip and do this 5 days a week at a steady pace of 16mph. I would like to add some days when I run on a lunchtime but am concerned it may lead to overtraining. I love cycling but find running is better for my weightloss and general fitness I no longer have a car so rely on my bike to get to and from work.

Hi Jamie

Welcome, and may I say...28 mile round trip per day...I'm jealous you lucky bugger.

Although overtraining is possible, as long as you're eating/drinking right in conjuction with your fitness activities, everything should be OK.

Also, the body gets used to the same patterns of exercise, so it may help to 'mix it up' a bit.
ie. Use some of your commutes as targets if you can, increasing cadence for the whole journey...or building in sprints if possible etc (interval training) etc.

Any way of varying things is always a good thing in my experience.

If you're going to use up your lunch hour running you may also want to think about when to eat, for fuel for the run and for fuel for the trip home.

If I excercise at lunch time and I don't eat in the afternoon, I am prone to bonking on the ride home unless I just go the quick route.
