Would appreciate any advice please. I am cycling Southport to Hornsea in June
Perfectly doable, Sections I know are from Bridgewater Canal over towards Mottram.
There are some sections before you get to Didsbury that are sand or a jagged brick surface, so a little pushing might be needed as you follow the Mersey near the flood overflows. Further East it's variable but can be done of a hybrid. Weather plays a part, but it's been a dry Spring so should be good.
I've done it, over 3 days with stops at Hatfield and Snaith. Most of it seemed fairly well signposted, but I'd definitely recommend buying the maps.
The middle section, over the Woodhead pass is probably the prettiest but also the gnarliest as you need to go over the pass rather than under.
Are there still steps somewhere in Yorkshire on this route?
No less inaccessible? That's an old picture, the steps have been replaced with some slightly less steep but no less accessible steps.
