I have just got a Trek Sawyer (the retro clunker 29er) it's my first ever mountain bike (have a single speed and a cyclocross bike). Got it mainly because I like the way it looks and wanted something that could go a bit more off road than my cyclocrosser – also gives my partner something a bit more useable than her dutch(ish) bike if we go off for on a trail.
Got last year's model for a good discount and seriously considering having an Alfine 11 speed fitted. Seen On-One are doing a bundle for £399:

and getting the local bike shop to fit it.
Have a couple of questions: One of the options is 18 or 20 teeth socket – confess I don't exactly know what one means over the other, could someone enlighten me please?
Also as most of my riding is likely to involve more road than mud, the tyres that came with it are pretty chunky, so I was considering something slicker. Not entirely sure about what width tyre I can fit.
Wheels are Shimano M475 hubs; Bontrager Duster 29 Disc 32-hole rims, tyres that are on at the moment are Bontrager 29-3, 29x2.25". Would a tyre that is 2" wide such as the Schwalbe Fat Frank 29er 28x2.00" fit?
Thank you in advance for any answers or brickbats you would care to throw in my direction.
