It takes a lot of marshals, secuity, equipment and insurance. $65 sounds reasonable.

They're mighty expensiive. London Hyde Park cost me £75. They're expensive to organise at the end of the day. There's obvious profit but it's very expensive to organise. A lot of the marshalls are volunteers and don't get paid.

Thats a decent price, Marathons are also very expensive. It's not only tri's. IM is around £300.

I'm looking at tough guy race for next jan, around £140 to freeze my ass off. Need to increase my running training.

Hyde Park is a very good price. Blenheim cost me almost as much last year and that was a sprint race.

It looks like I'm contradicting myself here. What I mean is £75 is a lot of money in general but for a prestige event such as an ITU race I'm more than happy to pay the money.

Don't bother with tough guy, I was considering it this year but it's overpriced and not actually very tough, there are loads of tougher, cheaper races out there. It's a bit of a gimmick.

Wierd, I marshalled at an IM a few years ago and got nowt.....?

Yep. I looked at volunteering for IMUK this year but it's the weekend before Hyde Park so I didn't look much more into it but it is certainly unpaid, although you get a meal, t-shirt etc. All the races I've done so far have been manned by volunteers. The club I joined recently will be running one in the summer and I'll either be racing (and paying) or volunteering for nowt. The money goes somewhere. It can't be cheap to hire a big venue, raod closures and policing for the big events and of course insurance. The big events have prize money for the elites but at the same time benefit from a small but paying TV production to help with the costs.

If it is a pool based tri, then there's the cost of the pool hire. If it is open water, then there may be a cost of the venue, and there will be canoe/kayak safely people, who will cost something. Then there's the motorbike marshals, transition set-up, etc. Timing chip set-ups cost, and most races seem to use them these days. And most races like to give their volunteers something AFAIK, and that costs too.

On the other hand, I've just paid £25 for a sprint, but that is one of the Borders Sport and Leisure Trust series, and I think the pool use is subsidised. They're pretty basic, very little in the goody bag (fine by me). The last one I did they didn't use timing chips and you yelled your number to the marshals as you went through!
