I purchased a triban se road bike back in october as a spare bike for work back in n october. Riding home last night the gears felt like the were slipping in fact felt like the cogs on back wheel were spining themselves. 1 mile down road and pushing pedals rounds no longer moves bike forward. The pedals are moving but I think the cassettes are spining with the wheel. Any ideas what could have caused this ?

Loch side.
The pawls in the freewheel ratchet have gummed up, jammed or broken. Bike shop job if you are not experienced or have tools.

As YS says, it sounds like the freehub which is a bike shop job (for me, at least. I put it in the "moderately difficult - too much faff" class of things to deal with).

And especially because the bike is only 5 months or so old, they may replace under guarantee? (I have no idea what guarantee Decathlon offer, I'm just guessing).

If you smile and are nice when you talk to them, you never know. If you go in all guns blazing they may tell you to f off.
