Triple Chain Ring assembly question...

Despite my best endeavours, I forgot to take photos when taking the chain ring apart to clean, as it was horribly gunked up and gritty, previous owner lived near the New Forest and a beach, so there's sand in lots of places!

When cleaning I spotted 5 thin washers which I'd completely failed to spot on disassembly. I cannot find an 'exploded diagram' of the chain ring that shows these. It's a Shimano Exage crank and rings, circa 1995, could some one point me towards a suitable diagram of advice please

PS it was really therapeutic washing the accumulated gunk off, a combination of paraffin and Muc-off degreaser

If theyre chunky washers they probably go under the smallest ring. If they're thin washers I'd guess they go under the middle ring. Youll likely be able to work out what's what as you assemble it. The rings obvious want to end up equidistant from each other. And make sure you put them back facing in the right direction. The little tag on middle and granny ring (if you have them) indicates alignment with the crank.

To expand on this a bit more, from my limited experience of cranksets (a bit more modern than these) the inner ring is secured with bolts into tapped holes in the crank, the middle and outer located on opposite sides of the crank's flanges and sandwiched between bolts and sleeve nuts that run through them all.

Hence, if the shims are intended to go between the small ring and crank they'll be circa 8mm ID to suit the M8 bolts. Conversely if they're intended to go between the middle or outer rings and crankset they'll be 10mm nominal ID to suit the sleeve nuts... so compare them to the fixings and see what they look like.

If they are for the middle / outer rings that still won't tell you where they need to go relative to them, however.
