As a fellow bus pass holder, I don't see any reason why you should not be doing this commute on a regular basis. I've got a 9-mile each way commute which is the minimum I do on the three days that I work - Tue/Wed/Thu, and I normally extend the Thursday afternoon homeward journey to 20 miles plus and normally do at least one more longer run over the week-end. I'm sure, with your background, that a 7-mile each way commute will not be a problem.

I read an interesting article a couple of weeks ago about a lady, now in her 90s, who took up athletics when she was in her 70's and broke world age group records in every age group including her current one, in several different events. The main thrust of the article, though was that this lady was an example of new thinking on how hard people can train and how hard training can be beneficial and will improve performance regardless of age.

My guess would be that if you can manage a 35 mile ride in one go, then a 6.5 mile commute should be easily within your capabilities. However you may need to work up to doing it every day.

I would recommend trying it on a weekend at a comfortable pace to give you an idea of how long it will take, and to familiarise yourself with the route, then try cycling in, say, Monday, Wednesday and Friday (assuming you work Monday-Friday). When that feels comfortable try adding in the extra days until you are comfortable doing the full week.

Remember, it doesn't matter how fast you go, so take your time and enjoy it.

Good luck.

So it's not really a case of 'building up' to a 7 mile commute. I could do it now: that sort of distance I hardly feel. Just wondering it time and age will catch up on me and make me depressed.

If anything, i think it will delay time and age catching up with you

Lots of words of encouragement here - great! I should point out that this relocation is not definite, so none of this may happen .

Pete, I don't know why, but I had you down for a much younger fella, must be how you come across on the forum?
Strange, that. I've often mentioned events in my own life dating back to the 1970s and 60s, and even 50s. It must be that wretched '3 word game'.... ;)
Perhaps I should put up a mugshot on my profile. Most of my on-bike piccies date from a few years back, mind. It would be great if I could find one of myself and Dellzeqq together  . But I don't think I have any. Maybe someone else has?

and to familiarise yourself with the route,
Luckily that's one thing I don't need to do. I know all the roads round that area like the back of my hand, and have several alternative routes already in mind. I don't know what they may be like in the morning rush hour, though - even though the route is mostly rural, there is a fair deal of 'rat-running' . I'll have to find out.

I'm 57 and do 8 hillyish miles each way every day. It's the best part of my day and I wouldn't do the job without the ride! It took me a little getting used to, but from the miles you do each week I agree that it shouldn't be a problem.

I do the full MAMIL bit - it's just much more comfortable - and light myself up like an Xmas tree. I'm generally impressed with the courtesy of my fellow road users and try to reciprocate. I say go for it!
