I find thigh/side pockets extremely useful - not least for my phone or a map when walking - though that depends a lot on the size of the pocket - I have a pair of Rohan trousers that were made to fit an OS map. In my experience, it is the most comfortable pocket to keep a phone in, especially on the bike. Unlike the usual front pockets or backside pockets, side pockets are rarely compromised by movement or sitting down. They're really handy to shove/drop something in when you run out of hands in an awkward moment too.

I hate the feel of anything with any weight in a thigh pocket

It is just annoying

I can cope with a sheet of paper or two

but a phone would be awful!

I find keeping my trousers in the right position is hard enough without weighing them down. I wear a belt with most of my out door activity trousers and still struggle not be pulling them up or adjusting the belt. when I am out and better dressed these days I wear braces with my trousers and jeans and have a waistcoat over the top.

Me too! I have a pair of Endura Hummvee trousers, which I really like, but every time I put my phone in a pocket I only get a few paces down the road before I decide to stop and transfer it to my rucksack.

My preferred method for carrying the phone (when I'm not commuting in my work trousers) is to use a "bum bag" (or jacket/gilet pockets and possibly handlebar bag or saddlebag); I also put my wallet, keys and inhaler in the bum bag. I don't like the phone, inhaler or wallet in the front pockets when cycling and I'm not keen putting them in the rear pockets either. Those pockets do become useful when off the bike though. When not working, I tend to wear Hummvees (or Firefly) pretty much all the time if I'm on the bike - but mine don't have side/thigh pockets of any consequence - certainly not of the style on cargo trousers or big enough for a phone. The little side pocket in my Hummvees (and Firefly) is next to useless and in a weird position - I never use that.

I use thigh pockets for temporary stowage when my hands are full.
I prefer the high chest pocker for phine, map etc.
Rear "cycling" jacket pockets are for soft stuff you can safely land on.
I do like a small coin pocket for supermarket trolly tokens.

On my own bike, I am always in bib shorts and cycling top, so the phone goes in my jersey pocket.

I found last week on the river cruise, when I was only taking one of the bikes from the boat for an hour or two, I hadn't taken my cycling gear, so just wore ordinary shorts and T shirt, which meant my phone had to go in the pocket of my shorts. And I did find it very irritating there, while I hardly notice it in my jersey ocket.

Only problem with braces is I can't resist twanging them!

Yours or other people's? The former, not so much a problem. The latter... well, times have changed.

Thigh pocket for anything light, like a map, is OK, just. But then I don't like having stuff in my trouser pockets fullstop. I really don't like the sight of a mobile phone in the pocket of on-trend tight trou.

Btw, my wife tells me that women's trouser pockets are often shallower than men's. I keep meaning to research that... or praps she's just telling me that I have deep pockets to go with my short arms.
