I have four photos, which I - might - publish.

1/ Me on my BSA 20 with raggety training suit and running shoes.
2/ Me on my SWorks in Western Wheelers, Palo Alto CC jersey.
3/ Me standing by my Ford Focus dressed in office attire.
4/ Me standing by my Jensen Interceptor wearing evening suit.

A once round the ladies in the social club and which one of the four gentlemen did the ladies choose to accept an evening out with?

NOT the scumbag with the shopping bike. NOR the muscley dude with the skeletal race bike. NOR even the office manager with his sporty two-door.

I think your work has to lend itself to this sort of thing though. Permanent lockers, decent showers and secure cycle parking are important. The type of work matters as well, don't think I could do 40 miles a day plus a manual job. Being in a fixed location is also a big part, if you need to travel around the logistics get to be a hassle.

Yes. I can get a shower at work but I can't keep any kit there. So every commute I'd have to take my size 12 steel toed boots (very heavy), shower kit, work clothes, sandwiches, a book, a good lock and all the other odds and ends I seem unable to go to work without. It's an awful lot easier to get in the car already wearing most of this stuff and leave for work 20 minutes before I need to be there, as opposed to the hour and a bit I need when I go on the bike.

Hmm, and then they'll expect more of the same forever; and you're wedded to it before you know it.

Whereas the lass in equally scruffy sporting clothes is not only going to be cheaper to maintain and more fun (interested in the sorts of things that float your boat) she's also going to look much better naked for many more years than the ladies who want to date your penis-extensions.

If you go shoppingfor (did you but know it) a mate with your penis extensions, try not to be surprised at the size of the divorce settlement.

I suppose any average commuting time figure is going to be dragged skywards by those who commute in London traffic. I suspect those on this thread who are arguing that a car commute is not such a big deal as all that (like me) are those who commute on largely traffic free rural roads.

To be honest, I thought a 24 minute trip as a national average (which is what I used) was quite modest - I had expected London congestion to drag it much higher, myself.

The upside is that for all those who spend five miles of their journey in congestion that that takes them 50 minutes to get through, there must be quite a lot of people whose journey to work is only 10-15 minutes.

It all depends on the commute, but London doesn't necessarily mean painfully slow commuting.

The average commuting speed for London traffic from Putney to Westminster is not far off 20mph. I know this because I often see the same cars (or liveried vans/trucks/etc) crossing Putney Bridge as I see 6 miles further on in Parliament Sq or crossing Lambeth Bridge (depending on the route I take that day). I spend most of my commute overtaking (filtering, bus lanes, etc) and being overtaken by the same vehicles.

Yes, fair enough. I should just have missed the word "London" out of the post you've quoted.;)

I can see how that would be a problem, I think if I was to consider transporting that amount of gear then I'd be thinking Bob Yak trailer, or similar.

It will all go in two panniers, but even that rather spoils the "carefree cyclist" feeling, and turns every hill into a bit of a struggle. ;)

Maybe I just fancy trying a trailer:biggrin: I've ridden with very heavy panniers(think a case of beer each side plus other shopping) and didn't like the feeling. I've read that, despite the additional weight of trailer itself, something like the Bob Yak gives a better ride with heavier gear. I don't know but will report back if I ever try it. There's also the benefit of, unhook the trailer and the bike's back to being just that.

Your house has wheels? Or are you reduced to living in your car already?;)

I don;t have a car. And my house has no wheels.

Its a lovely place to sleep though, because for every hour I sleep (7 per day) I'm really getting 8 or so, as the 16 hours I work for the shelter it provides must be added to its utility value.

I get about the same, but this is rolling traffic speed. The average doesn't include time stopped at lights, and I would be very surprised if your calc did.
