Cycling south down Penton Street, Islington in the morning rush hour. Traffic queued up for a hundred yards (tube strike etc). Dozens of cyclists filtering. Approaching the highly visible (green surface, bike picture, unbroken white line) Mandatory Cycle Lane. Stationary British Transport Police patrol car stopped in the traffic queue completely obstructing the cycle lane. No other cars were in it. Looked like he'd driven into it deliberately and he could not have been unaware of the difficulty he was causing those cyclists who had to mount the pavement or go on the outside to get past him.

I cycled up to his window and said to get out of the cycle lane as he wasn't supposed to be in it at all with it being a Mandatory Lane. His colleague officer then got all shirty by saying there were no laws about driving in cycle lanes. His attitude was appaling so I asked him for his shoulder number which he initially refused to give. When I got the driver's number he then told me his as well. He then refused to give his name or which station he was based at. I made a verbal note of his shoulder number and his BTP force at which point he jumped out the car an demanded all my details.

I asked him why he wanted details and he said because I'd asked him for his although he'd refused everything except his number which he gave reluctantly after first refusing. I asked him what he was going to do me for and he just smirked. I then asked if he was going to make up some story about what happened, to which is naturally said he wouldn't, not sure though as he was that arrogant.

He continued to refuse to believe that his patrol car had committed any type of offence by entering the Mandatory Lane. I kept telling him he was in the wrong and that he knew he was. it was hopeless talking to him. He was arrogant, condescending and ignorant and tried to intimidate me by taking my details.

Anyhow I don't have to be spoken to like that or be asked for my details when I've not done anything. So I've complained about him to the BTP.

You'd think a officers in a police patrol car would know the rules concerning cycle lanes and ASLs and the rest. Clearly arrogant BTP officers don't.

He probably got fed up with being stuck in the traffic with so many bikes filtering past so decided to block the path then got annoyed when his idiotic logic and actions were questioned so decided to throw his weight around by taking details.

He should have joined the proper police force instead of playing about on the transport network. Where are the BTP when jobs are drunk and making a nuisance of themselves on early/late trains? No easier to go after polite cyclists who've done nothing wrong.

Just carefully go around the outside of him Logan. I understand what you're saying but you need to do a Michael Winner here dear, 'calm down'. Remember - you are the King on your bicycle, and treat your subjects in cars with respect and understanding.
Have a lovely ride home...

god dam internet connection went while i was typing so pressed send and it lost the message, grrrrrrrrr

anyway it went something like - Good for you, just be carefull next time as you could end up being waterboarded by the police (if the drug dealers reports of his head being flushed down the toilet are true.)

Something from the last riots i remember is that the police have to show/display their numbers clearly, and i presume give them when asked. Yes even thouhg you may have been able to amble around them, it does not give them the right to take that tone with you

Here for rides.
the Police have to do a lot of things that individual police officers often signally fail to do. Such peeps rarely respond well when you 'push back'

What a contrast to the coppers we saw/spoke to on the last two FNRttC.... initially edgy and suspicious when encountering 50+ cyclists in the middle of the night, to be fair who could blame them it is unusual, followed by smiles, thumbs ups, and lots of encouragment and good humour when we explained what we were about.

Top marks for Logan5 for challenging illegal police behaviour. This is akin to parking on double yellows whilst they go for a butty, using a hand-held whilst driving or speeding on patrol with no blues and twos. It is high time more civilians reported such transgressions as ultimately people get injured or even killed. Think back to the Tyneside incident a few months ago during which a patrol car killed a girl.

When officers are allowed to get away with minor transgressions, they inevitably "up the ante" as it were. They also have a function in setting examples to we bad boys and girls who are clearly, in the eyes of some arrogant coppers, very near to serial criminals.

They may think otherwise, but they have no special exemptions from the law unless in direct persuance of their police business.

ASL? age sex location, haha their needs to be a teminology post on this form, tooke me ages to work out what LBS meant.

Anyway - i'm not so sure i would have said anything to them my self. but i hardly ride in the cycle lanes as it is. the routes i take are so badly maintained i get countless punctures in the cycle and bus lanes.

Cycle lanes. These are shown by road markings and signs. You MUST NOT drive or park in a cycle lane marked by a solid white line during its times of operation. Do not drive or park in a cycle lane marked by a broken white line unless it is unavoidable. You MUST NOT park in any cycle lane whilst waiting restrictions apply.

[Law RTRA sects 5 & 8]

Two things of note in that: "during its times of operation" and "unless it is avoidable" (although that only applies to a cycle lane with a broken white line). Whether these are just paraphrasings of various exceptions in the law is another matter, I would expect the Police (including the BTP) to be able to justify some situations as unavoidable (although I'm not saying this one applies).

The law itself (RTRA 1984) is pretty heavy reading:-

The times of operation is trotted out all the time as an excuse. Most cycle lanes are 24hrs.

As for unavoidable we've been along this debate before. The ludicrous thing is that parking and driving are on the same foothold in this respect even though clearly in real life they wouldn't be! The problem with cycle lanes is that most cyclists view them as crap, so when it comes to the law and applying the highway code we're our own worst enemy "but there are only crappy cycle lanes..."

The waiting time was probably added in as the people who wrote the highway code are probably very aware of people trotting out the above excuse "yeah but it's not in operation". Also why so many bus lanes with cycle lanes have yellow lines painted on them, just to reinforce you shouldn't park in the bus lane, or in the cycle lane, or on the double yellow lines!!!

They're all at it. I was stopped at a red light for a pedestrian crossing near Sutton station about two months ago, and a BTP car whacked on the blues and twos to get the pedestrians out of his way, jumped the light past me and then turned them off quick as a flash on the other side. Got his numberplate but it wasn't really worth following up.

Type of people you would want to be in the police are never the people actually in the police.

@Gaz - sounds like familiar story. You don't ride in Merton at all, do you?

We used to have the problem of police cars and council vehicles parking in a contraflow cycle lane. After a local mini campaign they've now stopped this and you always see police cars smartly parked up inch perfect in bays close by but not obscuring the lane. It only worked because parking enforcement went ballistic (surpringly) and was bollocking people for about a month. That's how we did it anyway.

This bit is unnecessary.^
I've worked with a lot of BTP in my job and normally they are helpful.

Did you take the car registration?

A photo of his registration and the offence would really have p155ed him off.
