Hi Logan,
i go down penton street every morning at about 8.15.
what are you riding?
i'm on a red holdsworth special.

small world eh?

Yes I have had trouble with cops in the past. One even accused me on the 1997 London - Cambridge bike ride that I was going to jump a red traffic signal just because other cyclists had.We ended up arguing by the roadside.Yes I hammered up to them but it doesn't mean I wasn't going to stop.

One of the first times that they stopped RLJ'ing cyclists going down the Gloucester Road, the TV crew were there filming it. And they parked their van on a bike lane with solid white lines. I was cross when I saw it but continued without stopping for the photo. If I had realised why they were there I would have absolutely loved to have had that photo!!!

He should have joined the proper police force instead of playing about on the transport network. Where are the BTP when jobs are drunk and making a nuisance of themselves on early/late trains? No easier to go after polite cyclists who've done nothing wrong.

This bit is unnecessary.^
I've worked with a lot of BTP in my job and normally they are helpful.

Did you take the car registration?

A photo of his registration and the offence would really have p155ed him off.;)

I'm going to get a helmet cam so I can record all these incidents. I would love to have filmed him yesterday and recorded him refusing to give his details.

Let's face it BTP officers probably couldn't get in the Met, same as the Royal Parks Constabulary. A Met officer probably wouldn't have bothered unnecessarily taking my details as he would have been too busy dealing with realy crime. Really annoyed me yesterday. And BTP really ARE JUST NOT AROUND on first trains out on a Sunday morning after the night clubs have kicked out the drunk yoofs. I was on one unfortunately a month back going to the airport and they were smoking on the train and generally being obnoxious. The BTP were probably all tucked up cosy in bed.

You don't apply for the BTP as a first choice do you?

The times of operation is trotted out all the time as an excuse. Most cycle lanes are 24hrs.

I don't know about your neck of the woods, marinyork, but most of the ones I know in London, tend to have very restricted hours of operation. There are usually single yellow lines and the hours of operation are stuck up on posts.

Though of course, even when they are operational, they are still often parked up. We made a big fuss in Crouch End with a the local council when they put down new bike lanes only for them to turn into car parks. We aregued that there is more to creating cycle facilities than putting paint down on the road and that enforcement is important as well (which most of us already know!)

Managed to embarrass them enough for them to get their parking wardens out to do a few blitzes.

The Royal Parks police were absorbed by the Met a few years ago and are now merely a unit within it. As a frequent user of Hyde Park I can say the main difference I've seen this make is now there are police cars regularly using the (otherwise closed to motor vehicles) Serpentine Road as a cut-through when they can't be arsed to drive round the outside of Hyde Park like everyone else

But your bias here and assumptions does show you have a thing against the BTP and although I work on the railway I know little about them.I know that they are probably hard pressed though so I find you assumptions unfair.

You met a bad apple granted but it seems if you back chat some of these law enforcement officers it seems like you,me or anyone else are asking for a portion of truncheon.Yes i've been to football matches as well.

They're all at it. I was stopped at a red light for a pedestrian crossing near Sutton station about two months ago, and a BTP car whacked on the blues and twos to get the pedestrians out of his way, jumped the light past me and then turned them off quick as a flash on the other side. Got his numberplate but it wasn't really worth following up.

Type of people you would want to be in the police are never the people actually in the police.

@Gaz - sounds like familiar story. You don't ride in Merton at all, do you?

Hang on though. they're only supposed to use sirens when safety's an issue. Otherwise they leave them off. Some home Office policy about improving the perception of crime, blah blah...

To be fair I generally think police from all forces do a difficult job well. I have no particular bias against BTP in fact have never encountered them before. I do think the public should challenge the police on occasions and shouldn't be intimidated from doing so from fear of as you say "a portion of truncheon". They're not above the law and should be setting an example.

I don't believe I was back chatting just pointing out what they were doing was against the rules for Mandatory Cycle Lanes and in so doing demonstrated their utter ignorance of said rules which they obviously took exception to and that's when the bullying started.

They were also out last night in Richmond Park. In the 3 laps I put in I saw them pulling over 2 people for speeding (and not just doing 25mph in the 20 limit, but for doing 40mph+). They also stopped and had words with 3 drivers (2 for using a mobile whilst driving), not sure about the other stop.

Using a mobile phone whilst driving is one thing, but doing so when you can clearly see a Police Range Rover coming towards you is just asking for trouble.

Fortunately I didn't encounter the boys in blue whilst doing 35mph down Broomfield Hill (I was coasting downhill as much as you can on fixed).
