We bought a tandem forty years ago, just after getting married. A couple of years later, we got our first car. The tandem has been in storage since, except when I rode it with my son while he was young
Starting and stopping probably is just practice, and you may have to look at your technique too. Ensure the tandem is held solid as they mount/dis .Check the saddle and saddle height so that this process is easy as possible. If you're used ot leaning a bike to get on, this might not work on tandem - or vice versa they're used a lean and now can't. But as above, no-one's going to frequently volunteer for something they find uncomfortable. The trick is sometimes getting to the bottom of what's actually causing the discomfort.
I have a lovely e-Tandem that I ride occasionally with Otherhalf. They feel the cold especially in the exposed hands, and so we limit our riding to warmer dry days.
Have a look at a Hase Pino semi recumbent tandem. The captain can apparently steer and brake from the back, though maybe the moment has gone now. You don't see a tandem for yonks, then suddenly there are 5 of them in the recumbent bike section on that bay of e. I was so surprised that I mentioned it somewhere else on CC too. No connection with anyone, or ebay!
