Just a couple of questions for the seasoned MTB'er, If you notice a thorn in your tyre whilst cleaning you bike after a ride do you rely on the sealant to seal the hole for good or is it just a 'seal the hole until you patch the tyre' type of thing? (hasn't happened yet). The rear brake on my bike was squealing like mad is one type of pad material considered best at keeping quiet or is pad material not a factor?

Yes. Unless the hole is bigger than 2 or 3 mm and fails to seal, leave it. One of my tyres has literally dozens of holes in it. Put the bike in a stand, take the thorn out and spin the wheel as it seals. Make sure you keep the sealant topped up, putting another 50 mm in every few months, especially if you get a few more thorns.

Squealing brakes improve with drier weather and clean rotors. Clean them with 99% isopropyl alcohol. I use Kevlar pads from Superstar, and they don't squeal anywhere near as much as sintered, but sacrifice longevity for stopping power from cold.
