I've got a chance to buy a rather nice, tubular, wheel set for not much money. For someone who doesn't race but rather is more just likes to ride training rides & fast 'leisure' group rides is it worth the hassle & higher expense of using tubulars?

No.

They are nicer to ride on but get a puncture and you then need to rip the tyre off, clean the rim, undo the stitching, repair the puncture, re-stitch the tyre, re-glue (overnight job) and pop the tyre back on straight.

You could use rim tape - not recommended from a safety point though.

Yes, use Tufo tyres with their tape and sealant. I have used Tufo since 2003 and although I have had punctures, I can see were the sealant has escaped sometimes, I have never had to stop for a repair.
