Good for her! The fact that the police could not be bothered to go after the thief is indeed disgraceful. What are they paid to do?

RIPA prevents the dibble from doing so, at least at the drop of a hat. They would be engaging the public to participate in what is classed in directed surveillance. It would require authorising by someone at least Supernintendos rank, and in order to gain such authority a detailed application needs to be submitted detailing impact on human rights for various people. Sounds tosh, but its not - been involved in more RIPA applications that I care to remember.

Had it happened in the street and a passing Bobby spontaneously wondered past then that's a different matter.

Its the same legislation that prevents coppers spontaneously parking up outside the pub to snare drink drivers.

So the ire should be directed at the legislation, and the 20,000 drop in officer numbers.

All right but what would have happened had the woman simp,y reported the existence of the stolen bike to police? Given them the contact details of the thief who was advertising the bike, and a copy of the police report showing that it had been reported stolen? I don't think much would have happened at all. I have heard of several such situations and the police still didn't want to know and told the victims to deal with it themselves.

A Glasgow mum did a similar thing last week, when she tracked down the person who'd stolen her son's new bike and ended up giving him a hug and a life lecture. If you watch the video you'll see she's not a soft touch, quite the opposite.

There's a link to the full video on Facebook within the article. It's a wee bit longer but worth watching to see what an awesome mum this woman is.

Avon and Somerset Police are pretty useless tbh. When our motorbike was nicked, we had to go ask the shops across the road if there was any CCTV footage, the police never came to our property, etc. Motorbike and bicycle theft is rampant in Bristol. They know who is behind at least 95% of the motorbike theft in the city, but they haven't done anything. Not surprised they didn't do anything about the bicycle as well.

I know in America the police in most large cities could care less if your bike is stolen, in fact most cities won't even do a police report, and no police report means no insurance claim payout! In fact even if your bike is locked up with a lock that has a theft insurance plan, they won't cover it either if there is no police report, lock insurance coverage is a pain to get money out of anyways even with a police report due to all the hoops you have jump through.

So when that person went and stole her bike back the cops didn't care just as they didn't care when it was first stolen.

The only way some people have gotten bikes back was to go to the police impound and check out the recovered bikes, if you find yours you have to prove it was yours the pay a small impound fee and wait until any court hearings are done with the person who got the bike taken by the police.

There is a bit more detail on the Bristol Cyclists facebook page, including some of the conversations between the "buyer" and "seller" both before and after.
