When I was a teenager, the man on our street with the hifi that cost about the same as our house used to listen to Nana Mouskori and Roger Whittaker on it!

Cool.... great entertainers both! And fashion icons too!

WTF? Utter bollocks.

Benb, for your sake I'll post the link again >here< it's a spoof!

I bought a quite exotic valve amplifier on Ebay a few years ago and immediately phoned up the British manufacturer to see if they could recommend a loudspeaker cable. They were refreshingly dismissive of using exotic cables. The guys words were

".....it's all a bit psychosomatic, isn't it? "

If you want a really good laugh and you enjoy bulljive like this, pick up a copy of What HiFi? Sound And Vision and marvel.

They must have thousands of trained monkeys cutting and pasting dodgy press releases into "reviews".

I believe that there's a myth buster who's offered a million dollars to anyone who can demonstrate an audible difference between cable brands, in a proper double-blind trial.

Isn't it amazing that no-one's stepped forward!

IIRC The Gadget Show did a direct comparison between the cheapest HDMI they could find and a full on gold plated £100 job, and they found absolutely no difference.

Marketing is a wonderful thing.

I worked for a broadcaster for years and my job included the installation of broadcast video and audio equipment and ordering the wires used to get the signal between equipment. It always made me curious why I would need better bits of wire at home than at work. There are benefits to paying for certain cable characteristics but you're up against the law of deminishing returns. In this case you need a cable which is capable of carrying a high frequency signal which can be bought for under £10. Shops make a profit on cables at the rrp and sell the hi-fi/video equipment to match or beat their rivals.

Don't forget, looking through an oscilloscope is the best way to enjoy your AV equipment rather than watching or listening to it.

A salesman tried to suggest a gold banana plug on the end of the speaker cable would reduce signal loss from my amp. I had already told him I would be clamping the speaker cable to the amp terminal. On another occasion I bought more speaker cable from richer sound. The man asked me what speakers I had. I ansered Mission (no model or quality of speaker suggested) and immediately told me I needed at least an incredibly expensive speaker cable. I asked for the cable I went in for.

On boxing day I went with a friend to Dixons to pick up a TV and Blueray player he had reserved.

Then he remembered he needed a HDMI cable, the salesman gets one, rings it up and says "That'll be another £89.99 sir"

We both looked at each other in shock then back at the salesman to see if he was serious. He was.... I then went to find the cheapest cable I could find. £19.99. Better, but not as cheap as the HDMI cable I bought online two weeks beforehand.

So, I hand the cheaper cable to my friend and the salesman starts trying to suggest that the 89.99 cable is "better" and that my friend "needs" it to get the best results from his purchases.

Remind me never to shop in Dixons again. What they are doing should be illegal.

Gold plated connectors do offer the advantage they don't corrode so they will last longer. Professional institutions may use higher quality cabling than the super cheapo hifi stuff but then that's because it'll be mission critical, may be installed in hard to reach places permanently so they don't want stuff going faulty.

They might pay up to £3 a meter for some cables!

But yeah, digital cables can be any old nonsense as long as it's been reasonably well assembled. Not sure what engineers approach to building cable such as HDMI but I assume they are a little too complicated to solder your own? Although I guess in areas such as broadcast HDMI perhaps isn't used?

Speaker cable also doesn't matter. The signal is SO high voltage that any interference etc picked up is likely to be WAY, WAY below that of the desired signal. Like you would need serious scientific equipment to detect it.

'Line level' cable also doesn't matter too much. Voltage is significantly lower than speaker cable, but still sufficently high for any interference to be largely inperceptable. Apart from heavy stuff like RF interference, e.g. your mobile phone going pippety pip pippety pip through your hifi, but then I find that kind of interference useful as a heads up that my phone is about to go off ;)

What always makes me laugh is that hifi buff 'audiophile' types spend hundreds of pounds a meter on UNBALANCED PHONO (rca) CABLES to connect all that overpriced gear together! Seriously, a balanced jack cable or better still 3-pin XLR cable will have none of the potential issues a single piece of wire phono cable can have. Then they spend £500 on a power cable ffs. Morons!

Microphone cable it is worth spending a little money on. Like £3 a meter. Signals coming from a mic will be VERY low compared to line level and noise can be an issue if using cheap poorly shielded cable.

I used to be involved in car audio systems, and the number of times I'd see decent speakers and amps fitted and "bell wire" or other thin cables being used to connect the two together was scary. Good quality speaker cable can certainly make a noticable difference at anything above whisper volumes.

I'm pleased to say that no one has ever tried to sell me anything like that. Not that I would have bought such an overpriced cable if they did try.

My current speaker cable was bought from Bardwell's at GBP2.99 for about 30 metres. If memory serves, he knocked a pound off since I asked for only 20 metres but he had one bargain bag left. Serves my 30 year old Keesonic speakers and Aiwa amplifier well.

However, I did recently obtain three 5 metre long 5 pin DIN cables to connect a cassette deck up to the amplifier. They behave slightly differently to each other and one is worse than the other two. I think there is some issue with crosstalk. It is probably not helped by the DIN input basically being a microphone input and the amplifier having an output impedance of 80k and an output voltage of only 30mV.
