Is it just me who finds these new fangled superfluous commentaries an annoying intrusion on tv programmes?
To clarify, tonight I came upon a TV prog. featuring Bear Grylls the adventurer chappie. Grylls appeared on screen getting out of a canoe, setting his paddle down on the canoe and then walking up the stony beach. At this point the announcer told us that Grylls had set down his paddle and was walking up the beach. Is this commentary provided to assist the visually impaired or what? I had heard a similar commentary recently but can't remember which tv prog it was on.
Is there anyway of muting this superfluous commentary while retaining the normal soundtrack?

There is: stop watching the TV, and go make your own adventures.

If this is the same thing as I have had on my TV I just had a root round in the settings and turned it off.

It was only because I had been overdoing it on the garden maintenance during the day that I was slumped in front of Satans silver screen this evening, honest:sad:.
I know, wasn't having a go at you. I stopped watching TV about 10 years ago, and haven't really missed it. I just do other things instead. I got fed up with the shortcomings:
  • too many ads;
  • ads at higher volume than feature shows;
  • shows never starting on time;
  • shows catering to the lowest common denominator, i.e. 'dumbing down';
  • far too many so-called 'reality' shows (that are anything but real).
Obviously, the internet now suffers from some of these shortcomings, such as an increasing number of intrusive ads, but overall I prefer getting my news from the internet. As for shows, I generally just watch DVDs.

  • too many ads; Record the programmes and skip the ads

  • shows never starting on time; Record the programmes - modern devices should start and finish recordings to suit
  • shows catering to the lowest common denominator, i.e. 'dumbing down'; Don't record those!

My Dad had same complaints and I suggested above solutions. I no longer watch any TV coz I'm always around my parents house retuning the box he's somehow managed to bollox up completely.

Oh, and the other thing about only watching recorded TV is that it is easy to skip through boring bits to save time. For example, coverage of sprint stages on Grand Tours. I skim through to see if anything much happens earlier on - splits caused by echelons, crashes etc, and if not, I just watch the last 10 minutes or so.

Ha - you beat me to it!

I had a quick hunt around and found an AD (Audio Description) button on my Samsung TV's remote control. That toggles AD on and off. Other modern TV's will have similar functionality.
I put it on to annoy my missus some days before work. She hasn't got a clue and the kids are usually sulking when I get home coz mummy has shouted at them for messing with the remote!
I then assume the hero mode, fix the telly and she doesn't moan when I want to shoot out on the bike. Think I may be a genius?

For me it's the other way round, Maz is always changing settings that allow everything to work together on the mass of separate boxes on her 'entertainment' rig in the front room. Takes me ages to work out what she has done to it this time and get it working again. :cursing:
