I am amazed at some people bidding on ebay and paying over the odds. Just one example: an xt cassette used once went for£39-50 + £3-50 postage. you can buy a new one at merlin cycles for £39-50 + free postage-CRAZY!

I was after a spesh avatar saddle. Already got one on best bike, thought a used one for the hack would be OK pricewise. Uh-Uh - more expensive, mad eh ?

the best way to not get carried away when bidding on ebay is to get your spouse / partner to do it for you

you find the item listing for the one you want and then sit them at the computer and tell them how much a new one is

they'll never bid within about 10% of the price of a new one

We sold some computing stuff on ebay not expecting much for it (mentioning it was used etc), and people paid more than they could have bought it for new - mad!!

i think people automatically assume that because it is ebay, it must be cheaper than elsewhere and don't bother shopping around online.

still, made me a couple of grand clearing out my loft last year, thanks suckers!!! :bravo:

Ebay is a seller's market for the most part. Exceptions to that are cheap buy-it-nows that you spot when they've just been listed, and some new stuff being sold by shops (especially abroad) can be good value. I think something like 90% of my ebay purchases (fewer than 30 I think) were BIN.

Never underestimate how low the average brain function level is.

Ebay is the retail equivalent of the Serengeti water-hole. Just watch the stupid things gather for the slaughter....

I was given a celebrity chef book (that Northern guy from Saturday Kitchen) and as I am short of shelf space and wasn't interested in it after a brief skim read, I decided to flog it on Ebay for a couple of quid.

But it attracted the attention of three female bidders, all of whom, it seemed, were determined that James Martin, in the form of his new book, was going to be theirs.

So the eventual winner paid almost £40 for a not quite pristine mass market hardback that normally retails at £20 (and probably £10 special offer in Sainsbury's).
