bog standard commuter lights then surely?

smart flash rear is excellent and cheap, £30 gets a good bright front light, run for ages on rechargeables

I have to agree on the Tescos thing, the 3w torches are superb, I have just upgraded from the worthy but fragile CateEye Single Shot plus to the robust and powerful Hope Vision 2 but the Tesco torches arent far off in terms of brightness.

Did you get a lockblock to fit it onto the handlebars with?

I have a set of the Eurolight EL140's mentioned by Raleigh Man and they are quite good. The battery is a pack that detaches quite easily if necessary and the run time is excellent. I had both lights on and they were still going strong after 6 hours. The only problems I found were that the diameter of the light brackets is huge and I had to use a lot of packing to get them to fit my road bike bars. I got mine at Argos earlier this year but I think you will have to go to Eurolight direct.

why not just buy 2 of the tesco 3w cree torches and some rechargable batteries, probably more light, run time will be ok as well, unless long run time is a major factor.

Having recently moved from some Smart dual halogens to dual Tesco 3W Crees (The lead acid battery was beginning to wear out on me), I'd say that the halogens still come out on top for the amount of light they put out. Don't get me wrong - the little tesco lights are great - cheap, bright and versatile, but not quite as good as my old halogens. Of course, they don't require a huge half-kilo battery to run on either...

The smart Halogens I had were 10W / 10W, rather than 10W / 2.4W.

Anyone got any Hope Vision LED lights? Are they good? I'm tempted to get some...

I have the Hope Vision 2, only arrived Friday and was in Birmingham today so no chance to use it, will report back, to be honest, it doesnt nail the Tesco torches in terms of light output in a quick back gardent test, it is undoubtedly brighter but not massively so, but its designed for a bike, it does different brightnesses and flashes as well.

I suppose you could have 17 Tescos torches for the same money ;)

Probably more than that, I picked up two tesco torches last night and they had been reduced to £8 each, then had 2.5% vat taken off! So for less than £20 (I had to buy some thick cable ties) I've now got the best lighting I've ever had...better than the electron halogens I did have, but then I might had had a duff battery on them.

The tesco lights don't have a bright and broad spread, but with two in place there is more than enough 'light circle' to see with, at least up to about 20mph on unlit roads....maybe more, but I didn't go faster than that cos it was cold (sorry for use of non-technical terms).

see my post in Know How on how to make your own lamps with simple bits of copper pipe and no specialist tools.

I am pretty sure they will outshine my Smart halogen set up.

I bought some Halogens off a lad at work as they were a bargain, paid £35, its a twin Cateye setup, not as good as the Hope and very heavy but if I drag one of the kids with me for a night time blast they can have some light, I cant resist a bargain and seem to get some kind of borderline sexual excitement from bicycle lighting.

I get very annoyed with the Muppets I see every day (or night more to the point), riding along with either one light on the front or rear or none.
