Completely pointless on a road bike in my opinion, and imagine lubricating all those chains!

Could have some use on a mountain bike though?

Like HovR I don't see the point for a road bike - extra weight & complication. There already is an off road bike out there with 2wd and I think it's a more elegant solution: link.
