Bad luck Tynan. Do yourself a favour though and slow down a bit! Even on main roads things can take you by surprise.

Slowing down won't necessarily help - it's normally safest travelling at close to the speed of surrounding traffic.

A corollary to Murphy's Law - well known to IT folks - says that no matter what precautions are taken, somebody will manage to find a way to catch you out. Like the time I was taken out last year by a door thrown open by a passenger in a car as it came up behind me in lane 4 at a very busy junction.

Hope you are soon on the mend Tynan - hopefully these pedestrians will now think before stepping out into the road without looking.

The more reports of peds walking out onto the carriageway, the more railings are erected.

It works in Birmingham and Solihull.

And what do we do with railings? We lean on them at junctions and in traffic queues.

I really don't like railings, people can get crushed against them. (even ones who haven't left filtered, I've nearly had to bail onto the pavement a couple of times when things have overtaken and moved back in early, railing would have made it nearly impossible to avoid)

Crikey. Selfish little pedestrian should have stayed and given you his contact details to pay for the damage if he had any moral inclination. :cursing:

Tynan, hope you heal up fast, win the lottery and bed Girls Aloud as a result

too much love! I'm genuinely touched

buzzing on painkillers and beer, shoulder feeling better already, just really nasty now rather than worrying, I'm sure it won't be murder again in the morning

tbh the bloke saying he was sorry three times and asking if I was alright three times (while I was howling with pain) was more than I expected

no idea how I could have hit him that hard and him be ok

anyone staying to insist on paying would be a rare gent I suspect

+1 Railings are a very bad thing, they do nothing for safety, and only increase the speed of vehicles and nastiness of the urban environment around them.

Railings... I was told by a local council guy years back that they were to stop pedestrians running out into traffic. Made me wonder why they didnt make them 12 foot high then, as people just bunny them and run out regardless.

Ok railings aren't great but they would have probably made me think twice when I bolted across the road chasing after a bus in 1997....I had a very lucky escape when I ran out in front of that speeding car that virtually mounted the pavement to avoid me...that was so close I was banging my head on a brick wall afterwards thinking what a firkin idiot I was and the bus driver was giving me funny looks.I was intensely stressed at the time and wasn't thinking straight.

I know railings have bad points but they have good points as well.

Ironically a few years later there was a ped lying in the road nearby who had been hit by a vehicle.

I did have my wits about me when I realised the situation and that car was so close im surprised the wheels didn't run over my toes. Also I had to sort of brake sharply from my running and momentum otherwise that car would have had me.
