some tyres come with direction marks for fitting, some don't, with tyres with distinct threads how do you fit?

if they show a type of v or arrow shape i tend to fit them so that looking from the top they point to where I'm going, and the tread marks on the ground point to the where I've come from.

is this generally correct

I look at the sidewall & see what markings it has on it. If it has no information the tyre goes on the way it is to hand... if it was important enough there would have been markings on the tyre to tell you which way to mount it

The two posts put together are correct - V facing forwards looking from the bars, and/or what the tyre says on the side. If no obvious tread direction or tyre-wall instruction then it matters not.

... one thing that is useful as tip : fit the tyre so that the maker's name or some obvious reference point is aligned with the valve - that way the position of a puncture in a tube relative to the valve can help you to check for anything poking through the tyre.
