Hello, I have a Maxxis Hard Drive XC rear tyre that I have not used yet (I have been running semi slicks for commuting) I want to start doing some xc stuff now the weather is nicer. My question is what would be a good front tyre to go with the Maxxis I've got for the rear? Thanks.

Depends on the terrain. Some tyres are better with loose soil, rocks, hard packed ground. Others are less specialised all-round tyres. Any more info on what you are riding?

You are right about the weather being nicer. I'm so glad to say goodbye to all that mud! ;)

While it's dry you can probably get away with using the semi-slicks. So long as you remember that semi-slick tyres and mud/ wet anything don't mix you'll be fine.

That way you can work out if you want a large volume tyre for rocks. A narrow tyre with an aggressive tread pattern for mud or something that rolls quick on the hardpack.

Fire xc / Cinders are both very popular 'general use' xc tyres.

Thanks for the replys. Barq, I ride on all sorts of stuff except mud which I tend to avoid. I guess I'm mainly forrestry tracks round N.Wales, but also loose rocky stuff and (dry) dirt in forrests. I get edgy when I use my semi-slicks off road, I find I tend to restrain myself on the downhills! I guess I need something thats a good all rounder.

I have a pair of Maxxis High Rollers on my bike, 2.1 size. Very light, roll well and quite grippy unless it's properly muddy.

I'd recommend a Panracer Fire XC in the 1.8 size, they're very lightweight, fast on forest roads and the odd tarmac as well as grippy in damp or wet conditions. Go for the bigger size if you want more cushioning and less speed.

I use the Panracer Fire XC on my hardtail which is used for all riding, road, tracks, trails, mud, rock, they are good for all options, I have the 2.1s, the 1.8 would probably be perfect for non mud conditions. 40psi of road 55 on road, have fun.

I too have just bought this tyre and having never had decent tyres before cause of cost i will say that the grip is outstanding and i think i would probably stick to these tyres from now on.
