I have a small tear appx 5mm in one of my tyres (Boardman hybrid with maxxis 700*28) so a two part question

1) can this be easyily repaired- i doubt it but you never know

2) If I replace the tyre do I need to replace both so they are the same make etc -thinking of the Continental Ultra Gatorskin

some people put glue in tears, I don't see the point. Others like to put a bit of tyre (cut from another tyre) under the tear. Again i don't see the point. Just replace the tyre

You don't have to replace both the tyres at the same time. How ever if you want a new set of matching tyres. yes you must change them at the same time

Best to place a picture.

If the tear has not gone through the tyre and has just cut the top rubber you may be able to super glue it assuming it does not have a chunk out .

You can run 2 makes of tyre.

I run gators and i like them , plenty of choice of tyre and everyone has a favorite, the best tyre for puncture resistance are marathon plus but they can be hard to get on.
