Ubuntu - Win 7 shared folders

I'm having a lot of trouble accessing my house mate's shared folder on his new Windows 7 machine.

It used to work fine when he had XP, but now he's switched to Win 7 I can't get access.

I've hunted around the net and tried lot's of different things without luck, so now I'm trying here.

I can see his PC on the network, but when I tried to open it I'm asked for a password.
He's set the shared folder so as not to need a PW but it still asks.
He set me up with a username and password but still nothing.

I'm no computer expert but more than capable of following step by step instructions and have successfully solved most of the Ubuntu glitches.

I've just about given up, which is a shame as he has a good collection of music and films.

I guess it's some new Microsoft anti-Linux setting

Has anyone had this problem and found a way around it.

Is it asking for the password for the default keyring on your Ubuntu system? That is, NOT the network password to access his PC.

Because the network has changed, Ubuntu may want to store the network password in it's keyring again.

I don't think so. I've had to look upwhat a keyring was and I don't believe I've ever used it. I use one password for login and that's it, and I tried that one.

I'll have a look tonight to see if I can find it, but I don't recall ever using another password.

Where would I find it?

could there be some other filter on the Win7 device - a firewall setting perhaps that needs checking ?

Nothing wrong with my internet connection

It's not a huge deal getting access to the shared folder, but he downloads all sorts of films I have never heard of and make a refreshing change to the drivel on TV.
Lot's of it has been paid for, so would be silly to pay twice or download illegally when we've already got it.

I have tried the Ubuntu forum, and tried lots of the suggested fixes but without any luck.

I'll be doing a clean install of 9.10 soon anyway, so maybe that will fix it.

That's what I think the problem might be. We have made some changes but he is also still getting his head around the new system.

There is also a lot less support and forums online for Windows 7 than there is for Ubuntu/Linux.

I guess a lot more Linux user will have Windows aswell but fewer Windows users will have Linux as a second OS.
