What remains is the name of the small hillock north of the hill figure.

In a 10th century charter, the hill is given its original name of Eccles Beorh, that is 'Church Barrow'. This may suggest that a Christian religious building once stood on the summit. Perhaps it was used to convert a pagan site used in the worship of the Celtic god associated with the nearby White Horse.

A few years later, the monks in Abingdon used the first attested reference to the White Horse.

I reckon there used a be a pub at the top, called the White Horse, which was renamed the Dragon, hence the confusion. The pub disappeared, spirited away in its entirety by aliens, who mistook the giant carving (a horse carved by drunk punters, natch) for a landing site. There, mystery solved!!!
