I agree with you.
In traffic, if you're looking behind, you aren't looking ahead at the pedestrians jumping out.

I mostly ride on B roads if I can (there's a few round me) and they are the worst for drivers passing too close. The most effective deterrant I've found, is to put my garden fork across the rear rack

(or a length of dead alexander plant: 5 foot long, weighs nothing, looks sharp and spiky)

He's behind you!!!! Look around more frequently which buys you more space. Alternatively get a helmet cam.

You do know it's quite patronising to tell someone to look behind them more often...

I'm with Crankarm here, looking behind in my experience is the best way of getting a motorist to hang back. Don't look, and they carry on regardless.

I keep meaning to cut some vinyl stickers (a sideline of mine) saying 'Idiot driving stay back' so I can slap them on the rear of any offending vehical...unfortunately I think I would run my stock of vinyl down too quickly I guess I get one attempt on my life in a 20 mile ride, but what do you do drag them out the car and beat them up? I'd never get to work!
