Ohh for some reason I thought you were talking about the plod being there.
The armed forces personel often act as stewards, checking tickets, dealing with people that faint etc.

This is because there is a connection of old between the LTA and the UKAF (UK armed forces)

I think the guys that do it are often volunteers?

That is it, but I think they get tickets.

I thought these were ex-army types who got jobs opening doors in posh offices.

The ones at Wimbledon are service members and as others stated its just tradition.

I wonder if any posters are secretly disappointed that these uniformed servicemen and women are doing this in their own time. Another missed 'debate' opportunity.

I served with the WRNS CHief who organised this for many years, they were as above all volunteers and when she retired she was warded concessions by the LTA in recognition of her long service at Wimbledon.

I also believe that there were certain perks involving young ladies who had a taste for fit young matelots in uniform.

On the plus side, they get to watch some cracking (and not so cracking) tennis.
