Yeah, that's a possibility. You're right about the discrepancy - I'm assuming it's significant? (Don't ask me, I turned my back on statistics a month ago, and am happily forgetting it all)

Also, if uninsured drivers keep to quieter roads, with less pedestrians, that might make a difference? Or they drive more at night?

still makes more sense to rant (any day recently in the DMail) against uninsured cyclists and assorted misdemeanours and a call to the police to enforce all laws.. (including spoke reflectors..??)

I see cars with faulty lights every bloody day on the London roads, and I think to myself I'd like to nuke the f@ckers off the road. Not only is it dangerous, you wonder what other laws they're breaking: tax, MOT, insurance, tax evasion, drug dealing, extortion, kiddy fiddling? And we law abiding citizens have to carry these scumbags.

Still, I so enjoy pointing out the defects to them in no uncertain terms when I spot them !

No. That's wasteful. Confiscate it, by all means, check it over and if it's roadworthy, sell it for a bargain price, perhaps under a scheme that prioritises those on low income. Result: less waste, revenue from the sale, someone who needs it gets a cheap car. Destroying a perfectly good machine with years left in it is a terrible waste.

No, not worth it. A huge proportion of the environmental cost of a car is in the manufacture, that would all be wasted. Having your car taken off you should be enough. In fact, I'd say seeing someone else driving it around and enjoying it would be pretty galling.

Basically the most environmentally friendly way to use a car is drive it onto the ground. Last thing you want to be doing is crushing perfectly serviceable cars which have years left in them. Best to change the locks, have them a good service, re-register the car & auction them off.

IMHO uninsured drivers are more likely to be in accidents to start with as they're risk takers.

Actually only 10% overall in fact. However, I'd agree having someone else drive off in your car would be pretty good.

I've seen figures from 5% up to 30% & that 10% works out at around 19k miles/year assuming 30mpg
