Just stood watching a main road for a while - just short of 10 mins (I was getting cold), at 6pm - not in the town centre - out in the suburbs. In that time I think I saw just under 50 cyclists - at one point I had 9 in view at the same time. Of which 3 were on the pavement - one of which was to take a short cut without having to bump his bike up the pavement - the other two presumably haven't grown up yet (they didn't look like they were the sort to be afraid of the road). And only one person jumped one of the two sets of lights I could see.

I must do this properly sometime when its warmer and actually take a piece of paper so that I don't loose track. Does anyone else ever count numbers of cyclists?

You should go to London: Bloomsbury, Chelsea, Lambeth, these are hot spots for cycling, in spite of the 'efforts' (not strictly fair some of the councils have done excellent things in parts). I've heard that it is very popular in the East as well.

I've seen plenty before especially nearer the town centre when I've shared an ASL with 10+ but never realised quite how many are nearer to home.

Bristol has greater densities of cyclists in some areas than larger parts of Central London, Chap. :becool:

I've done simple surveys (put on or two on my blog) on lights and pavement use. There are less cyclists here though, we're pretty alien, though last summer with the recession numbers seemed to double.

My run into work is rather short, but down one of the main routes into Huddersfield, I do try and count other bikes I see / notice, but for the most part I never get past 1 in the winter, and 2 durung the summer. I'm also sad in that I count the bikes in the Bike shed at work here at the University, on a good day up to 12, but 3 of those have been permanent residents in the bike shed for the last 12 months.

My commute is on busy urban/commuter roads.

There's lots of cyclists about, but am too busy navigating traffic and avoiding road hazards to do a survey.

Don't even look at my computer in case the car in front suddenly brakes and I end up kissing its rear.

However, when I'm a pedestrian I either admire a nice bike ridden well or despair for one ridden badly.

Where abouts in Bristol did you do the survey out of interest?

I can't imagine only seeing one cyclist on route ... I usually meet my first one by the time I've gone 200 m, and there were about 12 bikes in my son's bike shed at primary school I would say yesterday. I would say that if I'm anywhere near either a main road or a well used cycle roads that I am almost never out of sight of a cyclist for more than a few minutes - seems really strange to think of not seeing more than one or two.

It was on the A38 near the sports centre just after dropping a child off. I've made up my mind I'm going to go back and do it again properly some time and see how the numbers vary over the year perhaps. And none of the cyclists counted included any of the kids on the BMX's on the ramps - it was just commuting cyclists.

It was a bit thin during the bad weather - and I was one of those who left the bike at home, but we seem to be heading back to normal.

I haven't really counted, but I couldn't park my bike on a stand in the middle of Taunton last week, near County Stores where there are about 20 stands within 100m each taking 2 bikes.

On 2 days I ended up locking my bike to other bits of street furniture, as had other people.

Funny sight of the week was a man with a 32" LCD TV (it said on the box) in a child trailer, with his wife/ girlfriend cycling behind yelling at him if it got too close to anything else! That's what I call real shopping by bike.

I believe Hackney, my borough, has the highest percentage of people that cycle to work in London and one of the highest in the UK.
