12 months ago I got a parking ticket for partially parking on double yellows. I appealed, mainly to delay paying the fine. Then we moved house and I forgot about it.

Fast forward to yesterday, we had a letter from he baliffs demanding immediate payment of £500 :'(

There's no way we can afford even a fraction of this, has anyone got any serious advice on how to deal with the baliffs?

Thanks

Is it a proper ticket, issued by a local authority? Or is it an extortion notice, issued by a private parking enforcement company? If the latter, I would tell them to go and **** themselves. If the former, I would ask for it to be considered by an appeals panel, where you might get a sympathetic hearing once you explain the circumstances.

Think you need to get down the the court and speak to the clerk and explain what has happened, they can call the bailiff's off and arrange a hearing.

Yes it was a ticket issued by the local council. I suppose they've spent the last year finding me since I moved house.

What court do I need to go to? There's no mention of the courts in the letter

Why not start by talking to the council who issued the ticket? Everything is negotiable and I'm sure that with some reasonable discussion you'll be able to setle on an acceptable sum.

It thought about that, and suppose I've got nothing to lose by doing so but they'll probably just say you've left it too long blah blah blah

You'll never know until you try. Playing the "moved house and forgot" card would look like a good move. If you offer to pay the original fine plus interest they might accept.

refuse to have any dealings with the Bailiffs, only deal with the Council direct, and start off your first letter with " in reference to my previous letters....."

Learn a couple of lessons:

Don't park on double yellows ( I assume you know what they mean)

And pay your fines on time

Not really rocket science.

Next move by the bayliffs will be to seize goods to the value of, if they can't reach a settlement with you. They can't enter your house without a court order though.
