Am I right in thinking one side (opposite the chain) unscrews clockwise and the other (chain side) anticlock?
Or do they both unscrew anticlockwise?

Sorted - their both anticlock, cos pedalling doesnt effect their tightness, right?

Correct, assuming you are talking about the pedal threads.
The pedal threads on the right hand crank is normal threaded, ie unscrew anti-clockwise.
The left hand crank has a left handed thread, ie unscrew clockwise

Easy way to remember unscrewing pedals, the spanner if held from above the pedal moves towards the rear of the bike to unscrew. This applies to both sides.
