There is a lot to the mind over matter idea and having a hare to chase. I go up Shooters Hill at a fairly conistent 9mph day in, day out. Give me someone in front of me (or heaven forbid someone overtaking me) and I can miraculously push that to 11-12mph. So it's the competitive urge v the comfortable. I'm not worn out at 11mph it's just that on a normal day I do 9mph

It wasn't a MTB it was an elec assist bike. Limited to 15mph (hence the flat scalp) but can maintain 15mph on all hills (hence the return favour)

DCLane

Found in the Yorkshire hills ...
  • He''s a stronger rider than you, - Tick
  • You're a fatty and he a skinny, - Tick
  • His MTB has much better gearing for climbing - Tick
  • He's not carrying any extra weight panniers, etc. - Tick
  • You're tired, he's fresh - Tick
  • You're carrying a minor cold, he's fine - ermm
Conclusion:-

I am a fat sod that needs to work harder.

Depends on the hill; some I can do 20+ mph, others I'm under 10.

Also, practice makes it easier, if not better. The more practice, the less you weigh = the faster you are.

Distance for me is a big factor - on my commute (3 miles) I often can and will keep up with people (18mph+) that look siginificantly fitter than me simply because I know I can afford to 'put the pedal' down harder as I dont have far to go. When I'm out on my leisure rides I tend to ride below 14mph at all times as I want to save my energy for the long run.

It does work as well it seems, 2 weeks ago I did an 80 miler but along the way I had a good few miles of 18-20 mph as I matched pace with some other riders I met. The result was I was knackered by 60/65 miles and struggled to finish. Last weekend I did my 'under 14mph' plan at all times and comferatably covered the 80 I needed to.

And some of it is in the head! A couple of weeks ago I was stuggling to go 10-11mph up a hill near to me. All of a sudden I can manage 13-14mph and now I've cracked that speed I refuse to drop back down again!

JD how do you get on with Redhill? The lights bang in the middle are pain, throws me out of my rythm. I used to pray for them to be red for a breather!

having done my route 5 days a week for almost a yr now i get to know the timings, so if i can make it i will push like mad to or if not a chance i will cruise up and track stand or rest for a break. it is annoying though as could prob do my 22mile commute in under an hr if the were no lights ( 1hr 20 is my best so far)

I'd brick it going circa 50mph on the bike- would love to find a nice long hill and try it however!
