So my Win10 computer did a massive load of Windows updating last night, and I start up Chrome this morning to be greeted by a message saying 'Chrome is not your default browser'. Sure enough, the update has reset all my defaults to MS programs. When I went to change the browser default back to Chrome it flashed up a message 'Why don't you stick with Edge? It's really, really good now...' Grrrr!

And people wonder why I stay with Windows....
Ahem...

Seriously, though: I sympathise. Windows is a pain sometimes, but then Linux can be too, particularly if you're not technically-minded. At least Linux doesn't act more like malware these days.

Yebbut, making Chrome my default again involved clicking one button, clearly marked 'No, I don't want your crappy browser, I want my Chrome back thank you very much'. As opposed to, say...
  1. reboot.
  2. hold down Shift key at the BIOS splash screen to show the grub menu.
  3. select Advanced.
  4. select Recovery mode.
  5. select "Drop to root shell".
  6. run the following to repair filesystem errors: fsck -A
  7. run the following to remount '/' as read-write: mount -o remount,rw /
  8. run the following to continue booting: reboot

OK, no problem: I'll refrain from making any more comments, then, since all you can do is make negative comments about my choice of operating system.

I have the same problem, been going on for weeks. I usually post a picture of my PC updating on FB but my friends are a bit bored of it now.
I have downloaded the update manager from here so I can be in more control of what my PC is actually doing when updating...
Despite trying this approach the update has failed, I have an error code to look up (not with me)
Win10 = Pile of crap.

I find Windows 10 itself is great, run it on my big pooter, tablet and phone. It's reliable, stable, and it's nice to have the same system on all my gadgets.

But you're right, the upgrades are an utter ball ache. Too frequent, too fiddly. For someone who has nil interest whatsoever in computers, who just wants something to tick away quietly in the background, it's a chuffing pain. Leave it alone Microsoft!

My laptop says it's been 99 days and 2:11 hours since it was last rebooted, and I know that counts only the time I've actually been using it, not the time when the lid was closed. I'm sure I must have done all that tedious crap with grub[*] at some point, but it's clearly not been recently

I don't like the way Linux seems to be going (and has been for a number of years), but replacing it with Windows 10 would achieve nothing save to get me there sooner

[*] actually on this machine, gummiboot, because UEFI

I've been on Linux for years, the last windows I had was XP. Most of the time it just works, provided I resist the urge to tinker, if it does go tits up it can be a pain though. I don't like the sound of the windows 10 updates though, it sounds like they are trying to control everybody and keep everybody doing things the same way.

[description of what seems to be a manual repair of a serious disk fault that can't be automatically recovered - it's been years since I did one, so I may have misunderstood what it was]
Not comparing like with like there. Now you try describing how you persuade Windows to recover if it has a disk problem requiring something as strong as a fsck -A (and no, its automated disk repair thingy isn't).

Meanwhile, to switch browser: Menu: Preferences: Preferred Applications and web browser is on the default tab, so just pick one from the drop-down list and click OK. (Other variants of GNU/Linux may vary - hence, they're called variants.) Updates are forbidden from changing things like that without displaying a big red warning first.

Oh and the big thing is that I learned Linux about 1997 and while some of the parts have changed slightly (stuff like systemd most recently), the basic principles have remained basically the same. Learn Once, Use Forever. How much relearning has anyone debugging Windows had to do since Windows 95?

Uninstall Edge ? Or does MS-Windows 10 not permit that ?

Wouldn't surprise me.

I've been using Windows 10 on a laptop since mid September, and I think it's brilliant! It's done 2 updates I think since then, and both have kept my preference for chrome intact :okay:

yup - Ive used I think every version of Windows since it started - I dont really notice the system - its just a means to an end - running the programmes i want to - Ive often seen those magazines "all you really need to know about Windows xx etc" and wondered what is in them - do people really spend time playing with the OS?
