Upgrade wheels on road race style bike

Hi, i have a Scott S50 road race style bike which comes with 'alex rims'. a birdy told me that it would be an advantage to upgrade my wheels, my question is... what wheels should i be looking for (apart from round ones!) and what sort of price would i need to spend to acheive an improvement?

700 C ones , seriously its depends on your budget you'd see an improvement with simple mavic Asksiums, then there's Fulcrums (5 & 7) or Mavic Kysriums, these are all commonly suggested upgrades.
