Tyres make the biggest single difference. They are your only contact with the road and everything you put through the frame, forks and wheels ends up on two thin little contact patches. Get them wrong and the subtract from everything.

Then either of these should be a nice upgrade...

Make sure to get the ones that suit your cassette, shimano (&SRAM) or Compagnolo

Yeah, merlin seem about the best for wheel prices.I think you need to add on £6 for delivery, but it is next day insured.

they are next on my wish list then - is it easy to switch the cassettes over from wheel to wheel

+ 1 for wheels, BUT - I'd forget blowing that budget on wheels as you will get no discernible benefit from them. Get some decent tyres and save up again for wheels. I'd suggest you need to be spending a minimum of £400+ on a new wheelset before you will feel any benefit, and even then there is the argument that any benefit is all in your mind

Why?

You've got the bike to lose weight and get fitter. You should be filling your bottle cage with lead, not upgrading it to make it easier to pedal.

If you do want to lighten it, definitely go for rotating weight first i.e. lighter tyres and better wheels. Beyond that, just a comfortable saddle, adequate brakes and a thorough fettle, so that you will enjoy riding it more.
