My EBC tourer came with fairly basic mechs which have been OK, but are starting to show their limitations. I've mastered the art of indexing, but on a long ride the rear Acera mech tends to lose the plot so rather than expending any more TLC on it I'm looking for a suitable 8-speed upgrade (the FD-2303 on the front can wait a bit longer).

I'm happy with the gearing (11-32, 48/36/26) so I don't want to change anything else at the moment.

Deore looks like it might fit my needs and budget - any comments or alternative suggestions?

Is it the mech or the cable ?
If your having to reindex all the time it could be down to sticky cables .

^^^ What @cyberknight said.

Also, is the cable routed correctly at the mech? Something as simple as clamping the cable incorrectly (round the wrong side of the clamp bolt or not in line with the groove on the tab) can affect the pull and upset the indexing.

For what it's worth I'm finding my 8 speed Acera pretty reliable and sweet shifting at the moment but I'll probably upgrade when it wears out.

It could also be the pivots as these wear after some time my Acera gave up after about 8,000 miles or so and the old sora I put back on has just gone the same way probably about the same from new. Its very subtle but over the course of a ride it does tend to misalign slightly, though as you say cables would be my first port of call to check.
