I've been riding my B'Twin 500SE for nearly 3 years now, and have enjoyed it, but as ever with this sort of hobby the idea of spending money on something "better" starts to appear... but I'm not really sure where to start! I'm even questioning whether it is worth buying something new or just enjoying the bike I have for what it is.

The type of cycling I enjoy is road based, generally country roads up and down hills. I've done a 50 mile sportive around villages in Bedfordshire which was enjoyable, buy more likely to do 20 or 30 miles at a time rides. I would do more but work travel, family etc. means that I don't often have the time.

I'm not really interested in racing, but like going quickly when the conditions allow. From reading online and speaking to people in bike shops some bikes are much more designed with racing in mind, and some more "relaxed" for the type of riding I like. Is this a massive difference in the real world?

So taking into account a budget of £1000 to £1500 I've looked at the following.

https://www.decathlon.co.uk/ultra-920-af-road-bike-grey-ultegra-id_8402811.html This is one I've actually had a go on, if only around the shop. Seemed a lot more nimble than the current bike (obviously a fair bit lighter!) and I like the looks. But it's an aluminium frame, should I be looking at carbon?

https://www.decathlon.co.uk/ultra-900-cf-carbon-road-bike-105-id_8390339.html Carbon frame this time, but some of the other components aren't quite as good, would this be really noticeable? A bit more expensive initially.

https://www.rutlandcycling.com/bike...5-2018-carbon-road-bike-black_380965#infospec Had a sit on one of these but not ridden it. I like the looks though!

I also had a look at Specialized Roubaix, but not ridden.

Thanks for any thoughts, and any other bike suggestions are welcome. I appreciated the answer will be "go and test ride a few and buy the one you like" but any pros and cons to the above is welcome.

hi @mdh1980 and welcome from another Northamptonshire resident
I think in your shoes i would either just upgrade the current wheels and possibly brake calipers or treat yourself to this highly rated https://www.decathlon.co.uk/rc-500-disc-road-bike-turquoise-sora-id_8554411.html
Or why not try a good old retro steel bike and find out what real bikes are like ^_^
PS you are always welcome to join me on an early am weekend ride

I quite like the setup on my Merida, it's comfortable but quick, you can get good deals on the old Ride series like mine as they have superseded it with the Scultura range.

but the best advise I can give if upgrading your current bike is totally off the cards, is goto stores and test ride some different bikes, as what's right/comfortable for you is far more important than looking at deals online.

Bang for buck, the decathlon bikes are hard to beat. They haven't got the cache of a trek, canondale, specialized etc etc etc but you'll generally get a better specced bike for your money. Personal opinion, in the sub-£1.5K catergory I think I'd always go for decathlon but I would say that as I own 3 ^_^ so buy the one that floats your boat and save up for some better wheels as your next planned purchase.

You don't say exactly what use to which the bike will be put. I recently rode one of these and, as I do with Felt bikes, loved it. Felt bikes just seem to fit me like a glove. A quality machine, and a bit different from the run of the mill.

Make a shortlist, go ride them, buy the bike that feels the nicest under your butt. Don't get too distracted with spec - very few bikes have a genuine full groupset, and choosing Ultegra over 105 (for example) won't make a lesser frame any better. Enjoy!

That's my next bike right there I think, but not new of course. I'll wait until someone gets bored or upgrades and sells theirs off.

Thanks guys, that Felt looks good. I have also ridden a Merida Scultura 400 in Mallorca recently, which was nice to ride, and looked quite nice. The hills there were a bit bigger than I'm used to though, so hard to get a decent comparison with what I have already!

What's the thoughts on these? Although I would have to decide quite quickly... https://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/EBPXP...carbon-evo-shimano-105-r7000-carbon-road-bike
If you're prepared to consider Planet X (some aren't) and want a bit of a bargain how about this at ~£750 (£999 - 25% discount):

I've been riding the Ultegra version of this for the last couple of years and the only complaint is I can't get a full set of mudguards on it ... grrrrr!
Also the only items I've changed (apart from the usual consumables eg tyres, brake pads & chains) is the saddle and bar tape (bar tape for purely cosmetic reasons).

I went from your model (Triban 3 at the time) to the Ultra 700 AF. Bike was decent enough but upgraded the wheelset to Fulcrum 5s and then Mavic Ksyriums. Best decision I made to buy mid-range and then whack it on with wheels. Something to consider.
