Upgrading Front Forks

Hi everyone getting the bug again for mountain biking but with very limited financial resources, whats that I hear join the club, I earlier this evening odered a Carrera Kracken as they are being discounted at Halfords and reading the reviews on the bike it should do me ok.
What I now would like to know is is it easy when I get some more money to upgrade the forks. Is it just a case of getting forks that fit the head set or do you have to measure the length of the existing forks etc.
I of cause would appreciate all advice anyone can give.

The XCR on that bike is not a bad fork, should give you plenty of use if you look after it. If or when you do decide to upgrade get a similar travel fork to keep the geometry much as it is and you'll need to cut the steerer (top bit ) to the same length more or less.
By then you'll have decided to upgrade everything else as well so the shiny new model you saw recently is an absolute necessity for your continued happiness and well being.

Thanks rusty bearing your views have given me a bit more confidence that the bike will be ok for now.Just collected the bike and its fitted with Flighty Trail brakes and they are awesome.

Have to start saving some of the pension for new shiny bits now.

Sorry forgot to add ended up buying a Specialised Hardrock Sport 2011 off of Ebay.
