Hi, yesterday the front brake cable broke on my old Raleigh Mustang. It's a "barrel" type of end fitting - see pic. Just checking if this is a standard brake cable or not, because this bike must be best part of 40 years old and it's the original cable that broke. Thanks

Yes, that's a standard cable. It would be a good idea to replace the outer as well while you are at it.

Standard. LBS for the quick win.
Easy (and why not) to replace the (old) outer but (NB front) brake will not improve its effectiveness.
Decision might be informed by where the cable broke (assume at clamp).

Thanks, the cable broke at the barrel-end. In fact I lost the old barrel on the road somewhere when it broke.
